Liver Spots Treatment

Question by beckylamons: Why won’t my dog stop chewing herself?
My dog Kylie, an australian shepard mix, is suffering incredibly and we can not figure out what is going on with her. First question, are fleas immune to Frontline now (9/14/09)? We have frontlined all three of our dogs regularly, bombed the house thoroughly, as well as bombed the yard in which they are let out in, but we are still occasionally seeing fleas.
She has almost completely lost all of her fur from CONSTANT chewing and scratching. We have taken her to the vet numerous times and they have never really given us a straight answer on what it is. They said it was not mange and I believe this is correct because it has not spread to either of our other dogs (Chocolate Lab and Golden Retriever). The vet has given her steroids to help and Benedryl to try and reduce the itching. They also told us to keep frontlining her regularly. We give her baths in Nature’s Specialties Re-Moisterizer with Aloe, which is supposed to be like a hot oil treatment weekly. Plus a bath every once or two weeks. I have used “hot-spot” treatment spray, lavender shampoos, mint shampoos, oatmeal shampoos, everything we can think of. We also thought it may be a bacterial yeast infection on the inside, so we switched her food from dry dog food to homemade meals of brown rice, vegetables, chunks of boiled chicken, and chicken livers (occasionally). She has been on this diet for about 3 months now and we have seen no change. Many times I’ve come very close to getting her a “lampshade” elizabethinan collar, but I can’t bring myself to do it. She looks absolutely pityful and I know she is miserable. We are exhausted and are desperate for help from anyone who may know what this is. I have attached some pictures (warning: she looks pretty pathetic). She is a really sweet girl and we love her dearly. Please no rude or obnoxious comments because that will be of no help. We just want our dog to get better, so serious and sincere answers only please. Thanks for taking the time to read this. Here’s the website: http://www.flickr.com/photos/35520461@N03/

I’m not an expert, but maybe you should try a different flea treatment, seems that the frontline is not working. a “lampshade” would actually be a good idea, just so that she cant hurt herself and irritate her skin more than she already has.
Not being able to itch, seems bad. but in the long run, i beleive its the best option.
you should keep “bombing” the house and yard, to try and get rid of the flea’s
as for her already irritated skin, ask your vet if there is a lotion or a treatment to reduce the irritation.

good luck!

    :o Poor baby!

My guess would be perhaps she is allergic to something in your house?

I had a dog that was always itching and chewing herself. We finally had an allergy test done and found out she was allergic to corn. We stopped feeding her dog food that contained corn and the chewing and itching stopped.

I realize you changed her food. But perhaps she is allergic to rice, or chicken or something? Or perhaps it’s not the food, and she is allergic to a cleaner you use in the house, or something of that nature. It might be possible that she is allergic to the bombs or flea meds. Or perhaps she is irratated because she has been given so many baths, meds, etc.

I would talk to your vet about a possible skin allergy.

I don’t know how possible it is, but perhaps the fleas you mentioned bit her and gave her some sort of disease or bacteria, etc.

Have you check to see if it is a Mit? My friends Golden Retriever had it on the back by her tail. She maybe has allergies to something in the yard. (Grass) or something. I hope this give you some ideas.

oh my god the poor thing. I have no idea what it is sadly. The only advice I can give you is try different vets as the one you are going to don’t seem helpful enough

Aww poor thing I cried at the end of this, I’m such a animal person (especially dogs) Omg I’m such a cry baby, anyway,
well maybe your dog has allergies to all this medication the vet is putting it on, and all the shampoo bath she’s going through, I can’t really relate humans to dogs but have you started using a new type of cleaner in your house like for example: You used Lysol to Clorox, maybe she got into some bad food and it infected her inside like you mentioned, It could be anything that could affect skin/fur/hair so try reverting back to the normal food, shampoo, no medication and see what happens and also.. I’m a human and can’t really compare myself to a dog but I used a different type of cleaning product in my house and I got hives for a month and itched itched itched my skin off, and especially dogs are always walking on the floor.
    GOOD LUCK

that frontline, in my opinion, is garbage. my dog had fleas from the neighbors dog. i bombed the house, gave the dog a bath, and sprinkled sevin dust in the yard. i used sevin dust atleast four times, bombed the house twice and gave the dog a bath every other day for two weeks. the shampoo i used is v o 5. the cheap stuff.i did this and it did work. i then went and complained to the landlord about the flea problem, and now the neighbors and their flea bag are gone. my dog and my house are now flea free

My sister has one her dog who die at 16-1/2 years old and she had the same problem. The vet found out there is a disease called acaro. He shaved all her hair and give her some medicine and shampoo. She got better and she grew new hair and looked beautiful.

well their is some type of infection puppies get and it makes their fur fall off and makes them itch. i cant think of what it is called to save the life of me. but the hair strats to fall off of the tail first. but she might not have it. big dogs can get it to. but she might just be nerves and itch b/c of it. but you should switch between front line and ……. the other kind i forget that to.lol.. but some dogs are allergic to grass. i really dont know what to say she looks miserable poor baby. but i would take her to a different vet and ask them.
    hope this helps a little

Your dog might have a type of skin cancer. Also that happened to my friends dog and one day her dog got to mad and he went threw his skin. They took him to the vet and he did have skin cancer that made the underneath of his skin irratated.

you should get a second opinion for sure.
look for a vet that specializes in dermatology(skin problems)
get blood tests done to check the dogs thyroid and thyroid stimulating hormone.Check the dogs adrenal gland function too.
there are several skin disorders that can look very similar, unless this is a very bad flea allergy dermatitis?
you said, there are still some fleas in your yard/house?
if the dog is very allergic to flea bites, all she needs is 1-2 bites and thats it!(may need a cortisone shot?)
i know someone who had a dachshund who looked exactly like this.
Frontline is good, but if you keep bathing the dog,you are washing it off!
keep treating the house and yard, look for a spray that has IGR (insect growth regulator) these last fast for 3 months, you dont have to bomb the house again and again.

well it could be ‘hot spots’ it when the skin is inflamed, red and itchy and the dog nibbles and chews on it constantly. also keep in mind that just like us dogs can be bitten my other bugs such as misquitos ticks and other things.and i know its hard to put a lampshade on her but remember its for her own good, and as sad and unhappy she is about she will have to deal with it until you can figure out what is wrong with poor kylie. hope i helped good luck!
