Question by Rachel!: Which season is the sun its strongest in Michigan?
I know that question is worded awkwardly, but what I mean to ask is more so, when am I more likely to get a stronger sun burn as well? There have been times where I’ve laid out in the spring and gotten the worst burn all season. I know that it could just be the first time I was really exposing myself, but, my mom used to tell me it was stronger in the spring and I was wondering if that’s true, or what factors go into this? *don’t worry, I almost always wear sunblock, I’m not trying to get melanoma”

Definitely summer! That’s when Michigan is closest to the sun. I’d probably put it around the summer solstice, June 21.

You are just more vulnerable in the spring because you haven’t built up a tan yet. Also, if there is a wind the sun can be very strong but you don’t notice because you are not that hot.

A nutrient converted by the body into vitamin A. Beta-carotene is an antioxidant and therefore may offer some protection against certain cancers and other diseases. Foods rich in beta-carotene include orange fruits and vegetables such as apricots, cantaloupes, and carrots, as well as leafy green vegetables such as broccoli and spinach. Beta-carotene is not toxic like vitamin A, but excessive intake may give the skin a yellow hue. Scientists now believe that beta carotene is a powerful antioxidant with properties that can contribute to reducing cancer and heart disease. Beta carotene is one of the most important naturally occurring antioxidants. It is a fat-soluble pigment found in plants (notably carrots and many colorful vegetables and fruits) and in the sea alga Dunaleilla salina and D. bardawil. Naturalbeta carotene supplements are derived primarily from D. salina. Beta carotene is one of the major dietary carotenoids and one of the most biologically active of approximately 800 carotenes and more than 1000 carotenoids present in food. U.S. Cancer Survivors Grow to Nearly 12 Million, 7 Million Are Senior Citizens
March 12, 2011 – The number of cancer survivors in the United States increased to 11.7 million in 2007 and 7 million of those were senior citizens, according to a report released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Cancer Institute (NCI). It appears about 1 of 5 seniors is a cancer survivor.
