Why is the doctor concerned about my wife’s seborrheic keratosis?

Age Spots Cause

Question by Answerz Guy: Why is the doctor concerned about my wife’s seborrheic keratosis?
During her most recent annual exam my wife mentioned a couple spots near her vaginal area — a mole and something resembling an age spot or wart — to the doctor. She had had both for a few years and past doctors did not seem concerned, but since the “age spot” appeared to be growing and the mole was rather dark, the doctor referred her to a dermatologist. The dermatologist was also concerned about the mole, so she punch biopsied it and did a scrape biopsy on the age spot. The mole was ruled to be a common nevis, thus no concern, and the age spot was identified as a seborrheic keratosis. Despite the seborrheic keratosis almost certainly being benign, the dermatologist remains concerned about it and wants to remove the rest of it, stating that its location may make it HPV-related.

Obviously there’s no harm in removing it, but we are just trying to understand what the cause for concern is, or if she is just being abundantly cautious. Even if it is HPV, what more can be done after it is removed? Also, wouldn’t the tests on the original specimen have identified the HPV virus? Any insight is appreciated.

It sounds like the doctor is being either overly cautious or just wants to continue in the lifestyle to which she has become accustomed and needs to have some additional cash flow to do that.

Only 4% of all HPV viruses can cause cancer and those are very rare. In fact, the body’s immune system usually deals with those viruses very well and it takes about 2 years for the body to clear them with no medical intervention at all. As always, any medical decision is your decision and the more educated you become on the subject, the better off you are to make a good one.

good luck to you

Question by lalalalala: someone PLEASE HELP ME? ANYONE WITH KNOWLEDGE OF *SKIN CANCER* please i’m BEGGING YOU.?
I HAVE NOBODY TO SUPPORT ME HERE AT HOME. MY FAMILY AND FRIENDS ARE IN DENIAL OF THE FACT THAT I MAY HAVE SKIN CANCER.

I’M 17 YEARS OLD.

I was born with a birth mark, it started off as a mongolian mark and than it was something the size of a peanut. A black dot.
I don’t know when it changed, but about a year ago I noticed it was weirdly shaped and polka dot colored. I thought nothing of it.

For the past two months I’ve been so tired. I sleep anywhere from 10 to 18 hours a day. I’ll wake up , eat , take a nap, shower, eat, take a nap, eat, sleep for the night. This made me think of reasons why this could happen. Diabetes? Anemia? What?
Nothing.

So I looked up skin cancer and it says the last stage of skin cancer is when you’re in chronic fatigue and it’s too late.

Changes to the size or color of a mole or freckle may not cause a person to see a doctor as quickly as she should, but extreme fatigue might. By the time that exhaustion hits, it may be too late, as extreme tiredness is attributed to late-stage melanoma.” <-- What I found online

I went to the dermatologist and he immediately gave me a biopsy because he agreed it looked very suspicious and had all the signs.
He told me my results would be ready in two weeks.

He didn't say anything else.

I'm scared I'm going to die. All I do is sleep. I slept for 20 hours already and I want to sleep more. My eyes are closing. I actually peed on myself earlier because I was too weak to get up and pee. I also didn't change. I took a 3 hour nap and than got up to change. I even skip showers because I'm so tired.

I'm scared I'm going to die before these two weeks are up.

What do I do?

(I also have anxiety, hypochondria, OCD and bipolar disorder, so nobody ever listens to me or cares..)

At 17 your chances of having skin cancer are slim, so don’t freak out just yet. I can think of several other, more plausible, reasons for your lethargy. You say you’ve seen a dermatologist, it would be worth your while to also speak to a gp if you haven’t already.
