Question by Emily Dew: Bald cat? My 16 yr. old cat has big bald spots on his tummy and his legs. Food allergy?
We take him to the vet every year for a check up and at his last check up, the vet ran a bunch of tests, but could find nothing wrong with him. In fact, she said that he’s in remarkably good health considering his age. That only leaves me to believe it might be a food allergy. The problem is that he eats IAMS dry cat food and that’s all he will eat. He’s eaten it since he was a kitten. He won’t touch wet food, cat treats or any other kind of dry cat food. I’ve tried to switch him over to other brands by mixing the new food in with the old (the usual way), but somehow, he manages to pick out only the IAMS kernels and eats those! His little legs look like chicken drumsticks! Anyone have any suggestions for how to switch him over to a new food without causing the usual diarrhea and other digestive problems that come with an abrupt food switch? Or should I just let it go, considering his age and the fact that he’s in excellent health otherwise? Thanks for any and all advice!

If he’s been eating the food his entire life I doubt it’s an allergy to the food.

Is the missing hair from him biting himself? Check his tummy and legs for little bite marks. If this is the case, he may have aquired an allergy to something else (this does happen, my sister’s cat is allergic to everything including cats). He’d need to go to the vet and maybe get an allergy shot.

If there aren’t bite marks, I would still take him to the vet to get checked out and make sure it’s nothing more serious.

Well I hope your vet know atleast about the hair now since the visit. I have a 10 year old cat who really would only eat friskies and by my switching her food caused he to get Colonitis(swelling of the intestines) and now she poops blood :( she Is nibbling off her fur though. so check to see If he is doing that. She takes it off her tummy and forearms. Good luck, your kitty has eaten that food forever. Set in his hard headed ways. It cold be too much a strain on his little bod to change. It may be best to let him be unless There is real problem. I hope you find a satisfying answer :) Give your kitty a kiss<3 Oh He could have a skin Alergy to fleas from summer and winter. That is a big prob. Check it out. Does he lick the air when you scratch him??

If he doesn’t seem to be ill in any other way than the hair loss, it may not be a food allergy. If he is still eating the food you lay down for him regularly, then it must not be upsetting his digestive system. Does his skin seem to be drier than normal? Maybe he just itches, try a moisturizing shampoo or something for a while.

Where exactly are the bald spots? Is it where the tummy and legs rub against each other? It may be hair loss simply from rubbing. My sister’s cat had that problem. If you are concerned with switching his food, be sure to try something very high quality and very tasty. If you find the smell stinky, the cat will probably love it. I’ve found that Wellness dry (especially the salmon) and Innova Evo dry are very palatible for cats and Merrick wet is too. My 15 year old cat wouldn’t eat any wet food either until I found Merrick. Now she gobbles it up.

I would say it’s probably not the food and since your cat seems to like it and considering her age and health I wouldn’t mess with it. If it ain’t broke…ya know?
Other than that he could have a different allergy just like people do to dust or pollen etc. My cat had an “unknown” environmental allergy coupled with obsessive licking that caused her to lose tons of hair on her stomach and legs too.
I got her allergy shots from the vet and the problem cleared up. I think once the allergy stopped bothering her it helped with the scratching and licking portion of her problem.
    good luck.
