Liver Spots Treatment
Question by psrobi: Help with diet/eating for someone with Pancreatic Cancer?
My Dad was diagnosed with stage IV pancreatic cancer a few weeks ago and is having a really hard time eating which I know is normal, but I wondered if anyone can give some advice on what types of foods to eat or avoid and if there are any enzymes or other supplements that will help him with digestion. His cancer seems to be only in the pancreas, an adrenal gland and there are spots which we assume to be cancer on his liver, but not much. The initial doctor was amazed it wasn’t in the stomach or lungs. We have appointments this week for further diagnosis and treatment but other than drinking the Ensure liquid he’s having a tough time. I’m hoping to help him with trying to maintain the weight he is at currently which is low but I hate to see him loose more if there is some help available. Thanks for any help you can give.

If your father is having chemotherapy then this may well affect his appetite and taste. He may want small amounts and these should be as often as possible. Let him try lots of different things. If he is able then plenty of fruit, vegetables and protein would be good and fruit drinks.

My son has pancreas problems and is in the hosp all the time , they said there is no cure but , diet is the main key to setting the pancreas off , into the most pain none to man ,, I am truly and deeply sorry and will pray for your father for I myself know what this is like my son is 22 and I have never seen any human being in this type of pain and on several occasions almost lost , him ,i have learned more off of yahoo and goggle search about this and from Dr and nurses , than you will on here ,, avoid fat at all times not only does it affect the pancreas it clogs and causes the poisons to remain in the stomach , also pepper and such starchy foods , pancreas patients have a very selective diet and it so said ,my son can not enjoy the taste od pizza tacos ,, any fast food at all ,, please consult with his Dr and find out more by reading about it ,, and my prayers are with your father and your family ,, may god bless your family ,, truly someone that knows the pain ,,
Anything he is willing to eat and keep down. I added the following to my Mom’s Ensure before she left due to the same
horrible disease: 1 raw egg, half a banana, half a cup of formerly frozen strawberries. Keep in mind that he is or will be subject to diabetes symptoms because pancreas is the source of insulin production, but his meds probably already address that. The Ensure is going to provide the vitamin/nutrition requirements for the most part, but makes a good base and the blender can be an ally. I even put in peanut butter and banana in the vanilla one to make an “Elvis Cocktail” for her and frequently offered snacks like mild crackers liberally topped with cream cheese or even bites of my pizza…any pretext would do, such as “does this taste funny to you, or can you taste this, it’s a new recipe?” as even one bite at a time was encouragement. My mother refused chemo and stayed home as long as she could until she needed constant pain meds. God Bless you for being the caregiver.
When I’ve helped with person’s having this illness, they seemed to like milkshakes or Ensure. Others here have already given some excellent suggestions.
My main reason for writing is to tell you that there are medicines which can possibly make the symptoms ease. There is a medicine called Megace often helps with appetite, easing the stomach, stopping nausea and giving increased food enjoyment. There’s another medicine called Salagen which helps with saliva and digestive juice production. You might want to mention these to his doctor if he/she is not aware of them.
If he’s on chemotherapy DO NOT give him a raw egg. Even healthy people shouldn’t eat them. Chemo suppresses the immune system, and the bacteria that may be in a raw egg can cause a life-threatening illness in a chemo patient.
I’m not sure, But you should have your dad listen to Randy Pausch’s speech online. It was excellent and it may help lift your dad’s spirits.
I just lost my sister on 4/20 to this cancer. if he is stage 4, i m so sorry that you have to deal with this terrible cancer. my sister craved bread… i made her cranberry bread and banana nut bread… this seemed to stay down and it did not make her feel so full.
at stage 4.. i would give him anything he wants… just be there for him… let him be mad, angry and/or sad.
Please keep us posted on his condition….
