Question by Adam Adams: Questions about hair thinning. (Age 22)?
I went to see my doctor, which took a couple of months to get an appointment. I mentioned the hair on the top of my head was thinning, and he said I should take Rogaine twice a week. He didn’t even look at my head. I wish I asked more questions, but I have social anxiety, and my mind was just clouded.

Should I have him refer me to a dermatologist, or is it not that hard to diagnose? Is it possible to tell if my thinning is hereditary, or from my lifestyle? I’m very depressed over this, but please don’t tell me to shave my head, as I don’t have a very round or masculine face, so I would look even worse if I did that. I have always been depressed, I’m hoping this could be the cause?

Here are some questions:

1. What are the chances my hair is thinning do to stress? My brother has a lot of stress, and he has a bit of a bald spot on his crown, and a bit of a receding hairline. His is a little worse than mine, and he is almost 24. My father’s side doesn’t have any history of baldness, and my mothers side doesn’t have much. She only said he uncle went bald, but anyone else in her family just went bald at an old age like most people.

2. I’ve read Rogaine can cause your hair to fall out. Do the hairs that fall out due to Rogaine grow up if you stop taking it? I know the hairs fall out once you stop taking Rogaine, but which hairs fall out after that? Is it *only* new hairs that grew due to Rogaine’s presence? I don’t want to take Rogaine, only to find out it makes things worse. I also read the hair that grows back is fuzzy and thin?

3. Can Propecia cause permanent impotence? I know it can cause birth defects, but my doctor said once you want to have a kid, you just stop taking it for a couple months.

Note: I’m always picking and combing the top of my head. I know this definitely makes it worse, but I don’t know to what extent.

Also, my hairs are different lengths; what does that mean? Some of the hairs are tiny little baby hairs.

It is completely normal to loss hair every single day. In fact 10% of the time our hair is in a resting phase. The other 90% of the time it is in the growth phase. At any rate our hair is in a constant state of growing and falling out. The hairs that fall out are quickly replaced by new hair. Only when this process is out of whack do we notice significant hair thinning. Hair loss can be attributed to several factors: including childbirth, menopause, chemotherapy, alopecia, hormone imbalance, heredity, radiation therapy and aging.

The good news is there are many hair thinning remedies that can be implemented with success. Not only can you stop hair from falling but you can re-grow hair as well. A few of the natural hair thinning remedies include:

1. Vitamins A, B, C and E are good hair growth promoters. The best way to get them is naturally through the foods you eat. There are several ways these vitamins work to promote hair growth. They provide sebum and promote blood circulation to the scalp by increasing oxygen absorption and collagen.

2. Proper Scalp Management: It is good to massage your scalp regularly with herbal oils. Use products like olive oil, jojoba oil, amla oil. There are reports that alopecia areata can be effectively treated with essential oils of thyme, rosemary, lavender and cedar wood.

7. FDA approved Hair Thinning Remedies: There are lots of hair loss products out there that claim to work. The recommendation is to find hair loss products that have been reviewed by the FDA.
